What is Counterstake?

Counterstake is like a bridge that connects Obyte to other chains – such as Ethereum, Polygon, or BNB Smart Chain.
It lets you move tokens like ETH, MATIC, or BNB into the Obyte network – and back again.

Benefits:

  • No central provider
  • No middlemen
  • No registration or KYC

The bridge works because multiple users (called assistants) independently verify that everything is correct. In return, they earn a small fee – usually 1%.

📌 Note:

  • If you want to save the 1% assistant fee, you can also claim the transfer yourself.
  • Anyone can become an assistant or provide liquidity – and earn a share of the fees.

We’ll explain both of these options in detail in upcoming articles.

How to bridge tokens with Counterstake

Let’s say you want to send 100 USDC from Ethereum to the Obyte network.

You’ll need two things:

Then it’s time to start:

  1. Visit counterstake.org and select the following:
    Source network: USDC on Ethereum
    Destination network: USDC on Obyte
and enter the amount and your Obyte address
  1. Start the transfer
Click the blue “Transfer” button – your 100 USDC will now be sent to a smart contract on Ethereum.
Directly below the form, you’ll see the live status of your transfer.
  1. Claim on Obyte
An assistant detects your transaction and reports it on the Obyte network.
  2. Receive tokens
You’ll receive your 100 USDC (minus the 1% fee) as wrapped tokens – sent directly to your Obyte wallet.

Depending on network congestion, the whole process takes anywhere from a few minutes to about half an hour.

👉 After that, you can use your USDC tokens just like any other token on the Obyte network – send them as a textcoin, trade on Oswap or ODEX, or use them in autonomous agents. Technically, they behave just like the native GBYTE token.

⚠️ Note:
If your amount exceeds the available assistant liquidity, Counterstake will show a warning.

In that case, just try a smaller amount.
Self-claiming is possible for larger transfers – but if you’re just getting started, it’s best to stay within the currently covered limits.
